Lord Muruga vanquished Asura King Surapadman and liberated the Devas. In gratitude, Indra, the Lord of the Devas, gave his daughter Devi Devanai’s hand in marriage to Lord Muruga. This is celebrated by Muruga Devotees worldwide as Thirukalyanam Day.
The divine marriage of Lord Muruga with His consort Devi Devanai signifies the attainment of inner peace from the spiritual wisdom gained after vanquishing the darkness (Soorasamharam) within us.
